Introduction   Leading businesses know that change is an ever-present and influential aspect of their operating environment. For many organizations, effective change management is nothing less than a core competency needed to maintain their competitive edge or even to survive. However managing change is a challenge and situational awareness (SA) is an important new capability that will help every organization manage change more effectively.   SA as a concept, technology and practice has been around for some years in specific operating environments, such as the military and aviation. SA supports the ability of individuals operating in these environments to handle complex and rapidly changing situations in which decisions are often made under stressful conditions. SA also assumes that these individuals are operating as part of a network of others and delivers an e... (more)

Modeling Service-Oriented Enterprise Architecture

How do you establish agile enterprise architecture? How can you rapidly develop and deploy applications to satisfy or even lead the market demand? Many enterprises are constructing and reorganizing the architecture using the concept of service-oriented architecture (SOA). However, we may all encounter some problems when applying SOA using some existing development processes and notations, such as object-oriented analysis and design (OOAD), enterprise architecture (EA) frameworks, and business process modeling (BPM). For OOAD, it provides a micro-level abstraction such as classes and individual object instances, but the application can be changed easier than the services. We need a super level of abstraction on the application level, and sometimes it's not synchronized with the BPM. EA also is limited in that it cannot reach down to the design domain. For BPM, the pr... (more)

John Zachman, Edward de Bono and the Art of Presentation

What is common between John Zachman (who created the field of Enterprise Architecture) and Edward de Bono (who originated the term Lateral Thinking)? Both of them are now septuagenarian and have been pioneer in their respective field and have their respective strong personal brand – but that is not what I am talking about. Recently, thanks to Sunil of iCMG, I had the opportunity to meet John Zachman in an evening event. There I learned that he uses the old fashioned transparencies and overhead projector for all his training programs. In a way it is apt as one of the key points that he makes in an EA training is that Enterprise Architecture has very little to do with Information Technology. Couple of years back Edward de Bono was in India and he handled a program for our organization. He also believes in transparencies and overhead projector. Here is a picture which I... (more)

No metadata? No problem! Custom entity extraction in SharePoint 2013

Every organization wants better search results.  However, few have actually spent the time to create file plans, content types, and managed properties to make it happen.  SharePoint 2013 has a feature called entity extraction though that can actually infer values by comparing what it finds in the body of the document to a dictionary.  This feature is Entity Extraction.  If you are familiar with FAST Search for SharePoint or FAST ESP, you know that entity extraction is nothing new.  What it does is gives you the power to infer the values of managed properties in search without having metadata in your site columns.  FS4SP and SharePoint 2013 come with an extraction dictionaries for company names out-of-the-box.  This means when it crawls it will search the contents of the body of your documents and if it recognizes any companies it knows, you can then search and refin... US Navy PEO for C4I: An update for the enterprise technologist

By BobGourley In September, the US Navy executive in charge of major IT programs (the Program Executive Officer or PEO for Command, Control, Computers, Communications and Intelligence) RDML Jerry Burroughs published his 2013-2018 PEO C4I Strategic Plan (available here).  It’s worth a read.  The main focus is on how to achieve efficiencies and savings and I believe we will see some restructuring to strengthen the programs Navy cares most about – such as CANES (the common computing environment for Navy ships), which is moving from development to full deployment. A renewed emphasis will be placed on reducing variation among platform baselines.  During the hectic boom years of deploying rapid solutions to two war-fronts at once, multiple designs were able to slip through the acquisition process.  Getting the needed capability where it was required often trumped the “w... A New Stage of Progression for Technology?

With the new administration in Washington, it may be useful to look at what has engendered new stages of technological innovation and adoption. The US economy has always tended to thrive in periods associated with the rise of certain key technologies: the Railroad, the Automobile, the Telephone, the Computer, the Internet. Where are we now, and where do we go to identify and develop the next innovations and advances that will support growth from here forward? In the case of the internal combustion engine and the automobile, the basic automobile appeared late in the 19th century, with the factory-produced version of what we would still recognize as an automobile – with pneumatic tires, transmission, and conventional steering - appearing in 1902. Vast improvements have been made since then, yet even after endless layers of enhancements, the basic architecture and tech... (more)
